Family portraiture is produced in two distinctive styles; formal or informal/casual. Informal style imagery is created using relaxed poses during the shoot with emphasis placed on creating great expressions of those involved. Formal style photography depicts men wearing suits and ties and ladies in skirts or dresses. Either style of imagery can be created for you. Photo shoots may be created here at our Ottawa portrait studio or at a location of your choice. In home family portraits as well as outdoor portraits in a park environment (weather and season permitting) are also available for clients to make their selection from. We also offer specially priced studio portrait packages that include the shoot fee and photographs, and all shoots may be created in your choice of either colour, black and white or sepia tone photography. For clients seeking professional photographic wall portraiture, this imagery is available in many sizes and photo finishing surfaces including artists stretcher frame canvas portraits. Family and children’s portraits combined with canvas mounting and custom print making render stunning, timeless portrayals of those involved. In addition, numerous professional finishing services are provided to our clients such as custom printing, correctional retouching, professional albums, presentation display folios, archival dry mounting and lamination of your favourite images.
Clothing
Clothing selection for your photo shoot is very important. Generally speaking, clients should strive to wear clothing of similar tonality and/or colour. This will produce a theme of continuity throughout the session and will ensure that the faces of the people take precedence as opposed to the clothing. For example: we often suggest to clients that they wear white shirts and blue jeans for a casual photo shoot so the clothing does not become competitive between each individual. Please ensure that casual clothing does not contain any brand names or labels. Basically, the object of dressing in similar tonality and brightness levels is that emphasis be placed on the faces of the people as opposed to the clothing.
Another recommendation which will benefit your appearance is to avoid striped or busy patterned fabrics. Plain clothing ensures that the finest portraits will be created of you and your loved ones. Clothing that is darker in tonality will make individuals appear slimmer than they actually are. As a suggestion, wear medium to darker tones such as navy blue, dark greens, greys, burgundy or black. If weight is not a concern, then white blouses and shirts are acceptable. Simply put, dark tones make individuals appear thinner whereas bright toned clothing will make you appear heavier. If weight is a concern, then dark coloured clothing should be your only option.
Shoes
Please wear simple, unpatterned footwear. Shoes that display brand names, stripes, or multi colours, are unattractive and not desirable in professional photography. They become a distraction and I often suggest that clients remove them entirely and go barefoot creating a superior look to your casual family portraiture.
Baby Photography
Clients are offered their choice of five fully inclusive portrait packages to make their selection from in either colour, black and white or sepia tone printing. These specially priced photography portrait packages include the shoot fee and imagery ranging in size from wallets to 8" x 10"s. Any number of additional prints above the package may be ordered at special sale prices! We have several backgrounds for you to make your selection from ranging from our popular bright white high key look to a darker toned low key appearance. As a suggestion, we recommend clients call the studio or visit the website to view sample imagery prior to their actual shoot date, to make appropriate backdrop selection. This ensures that the studio is prepared for your arrival pertaining to your children or baby photo shoot. During your initial inquiry, we will determine the best time of day to produce your children’s photography and review clothing selection as well. Each photo shoot includes the creation of individual baby or children’s portraits followed by imagery containing one or two parents as well. Outdoor Portraits in a Park
Family photography created outdoors provides our clients with a unique photographic experience. Our Ottawa park portraiture is suitable for couples, families and the inclusion of your favourite pet. Environmental photography, combining our clients with Ottawa’s flora and fauna, produce relaxed poses and natural expressions of all participants. Specific Ottawa area parks are selected to enhance your portrait setting, creating memorable imagery for years to come. Several poses of family members including individual and larger sized groups, are produced to further diversify your print selection pertaining to ordering purposes.
Regarding appropriate clothing, please refer to the description above for helpful advice. It is highly recommended that clients adhere to these suggestions which will produce the finest portrait imagery possible. Casual wear/attire is an excellent choice for Ottawa park photography.
Should inclement weather occur on the day of your shoot, clients have the option of rescheduling to another appropriate day, or have their portrait imagery created in the comfort of my Ottawa studio. The optimum time of day to produce outdoor park imagery is preferably early morning or mid to late afternoon during summer months. If overcast conditions prevail, anytime of day is feasible. We would be pleased to review any outdoor locations/suggestions you may have regarding your family photo session, and following this a location deemed conducive to professional portrait photography will be selected.
Finished photographs are produced in several appearances including colour, black and white and the timeless look of sepia tone. Any size and quantity of professionally created portrait imagery is available for your ordering convenience. Graduation Photography
Graduation portrait shoots are produced utilizing professional lighting and backdrop systems. The shoots are typically produced in a low key theme creating excellent highlight and shadow detail throughout. Clients have the option of making their selection from several professionally produced portrait packages featuring colour, black and white or sepia tone imagery. Posing props which include a diploma are kept to a minimum placing emphasis on the face of the student thereby enhancing the finished portrait.
It is a general opinion that backgrounds featuring artificial books are somewhat dated in today’s time frame, and their appearance questionable. Backdrop selection utilizing professional hand painted canvas (see portrait featured above), or grey muslin fabric has been better received by the public. If clients object to canvas/muslin fabric backdrops, we do stock a book backdrop and other’s and will do our utmost to accommodate your requirements.
Portraits from these shoots are carefully lit and all imagery is produced at high quality professional photographic labs. Imagery is available in any size ranging from wallets to wall portraits. Additional services include professional retouching if required, presentation display folios that clients often purchase as gifts, stretcher frame canvas portraits including acid free archival dry mounting and lamination.

Pet Photography
Photography of your pet(s) may be created in either our Ottawa studio, the comfort of your home, or outdoor park environment. During spring, summer, and autumn, outdoor pet photography portraits created in a park are most appealing. The beauty of our natural environment in conjunction with your pet creates stunning, life like renditions in professional portraiture. A recommendation regarding outdoor photography pertaining to both people and pet portraits is that we schedule two shoot dates should inclement weather occur. In addition, the time of day should also be addressed depending upon which outdoor location will be utilized for your pet photo shoot.
The sessions include individual portraits of not only your pet, but the inclusion of you as well to further diversify your imagery. Family members are encouraged to dress in similar casual attire, lending itself to a relaxed outdoor portrait theme. Professional photographs from these shoots are purchased a la carte and are available in any size or quantity that clients desire.
