Introduction

Welcome to this informative photography column which will provide the reader with answers pertaining to several topics in photography. Working as a professional photographer and instructor over many years has inevitably led to me being questioned as to how I achieved a particular effect in my photographs, which lens or camera did I use, etc. For this and other reasons, is how these articles have come to fruition. It is my hope this column will prove beneficial not only for the novice and advanced amateur photographer, but for numerous individuals who feel they have an appreciation of our visual surroundings. Making reference to the previous statement, it has been my experience that many people’s sense of vision is subdued and has not been allowed to develop to it’s full potential for a variety reasons. I am confident that the reader will be able to expand their sense of vision with a heightened awareness, as they proceed throughout these tutorials.

Determining Your Camera Needs

Welcome to this newly generated photography column hosted by Jeff Ryan. Each month will feature a new topic in photography and if necessary, the articles will overlap month to month if additional space is required to fully explain a particular feature of your camera or photo technique. References will be primarily directed towards film cameras however, digital products often feature similar controls so the reader will unquestionably benefit from the following information. My approach in writing this column is to include both film and digital photographers with preference given to film but more importantly, to help photographers realize that sophisticated digital equipment is not required to produce award winning imagery. The reader should be reminded that film has produced the most striking historical portraits and commercial imagery for years prior to the introduction of the computer. It is my intent to make the reader understand that getting caught up in digital software programs and expensive cameras will not produce better imagery. Serious photographers have long realized that although expensive and excessive amounts of equipment are nice to own, it often comes down to your talents as a photographer, working with a limited amount of gear which often creates the best imagery.
